Alexandrite, diode, and Nd:YAG lasers use different wavelengths. The best option depends on your skin tone, hair characteristics, area, and the practitioner's assessment. A device name alone does not establish suitability, safety, or the result you will achieve.
Start with the person, not the machine ranking
It is tempting to search for a single “best laser” and book whichever clinic owns it. The more useful question is which approach suits the hair and skin you actually want treated. A successful plan involves the device, its settings, cooling, the operator's judgment, and your preparation together.
Bring specific goals to the consultation. Are you treating coarse underarm hair, a mixed-color beard, or fine facial growth? Have you recently tanned? Did you have a reaction to an earlier treatment? Those details can be more important than comparing two machine names in isolation.
Alexandrite: a common option for suitable lighter skin
Alexandrite hair-removal lasers commonly use a 755-nanometer wavelength. This can be useful for appropriately selected darker hair on lighter skin. Because pigment in the skin also matters, it is not sensible to assume the same approach fits every skin tone or a newly tanned area.
If Alexandrite is suggested, ask why it is appropriate for the area being assessed today. You are not asking the practitioner to reveal a secret technique; you are asking them to connect the equipment choice with your individual characteristics and risks.
Diode: another family of laser systems
Diode systems commonly operate around the 800–810-nanometer range, although devices vary. Different products can have different features, so the word “diode” does not describe every detail of a treatment. Avoid assuming that two clinics using that label are necessarily providing identical care.
Ask for the actual device and the reason it is being considered. Discussion should still include your skin, hair, preparation, expected course, and follow-up. A marketing claim about speed or comfort should not replace those basics.
Nd:YAG: an important option for darker skin tones
Long-pulsed 1064-nanometer Nd:YAG is often an important choice when treating darker skin. Its use still requires appropriate assessment and technique. It does not make every kind of hair treatable, remove the need for cooling, or eliminate the possibility of complications.

Questions that reveal more than a brand name
- Why does this device fit my current skin and hair?
- What would make you postpone or change treatment?
- How will cooling and skin response be monitored?
- What result is realistic for the lightest or finest hairs in this area?
- Who should I contact if my response is unexpected?
Record the answers along with the proposed schedule and quote. If two providers recommend different approaches, ask each to explain the reasoning instead of deciding solely by the newest machine advertisement.
The right tool still has limits
White, gray, and some very light or red hair may respond poorly because there is little suitable pigment to target. Switching laser brands does not automatically solve that problem.
